Critter Claws

image

So, Tell us a little bit about your label and what you do?
Critter Claws is a nail art business - I paint art and designs on people’s nails and pop up at different places and events (feel free to contact me ifyou want me to pop up at your event!). Nail art to me is like a tattoo - it has the personalisation of one, without the permanence!

What inspires your work?
I’m a pop culture junkie and love music, fashion, 90s nostalgia, old cartoons and books, and this translates into my nail art, whether it be album covers of music I’m listening to, or a print from one of my favourite clothing items. I’m also inspired by anything whimsical and cute!

What’s your creative background?
I’m studying graphic design and loving it. I’ve also dabbled in a little bit of drawing/illustration.

What is the best part about having your own business?
I have full control over everything - designing my logo, branding and promotional material, the business aspect, where I pop up, my social media presence. It’s exciting knowing that everything that will come out of this venture is all a result of my hard work.

What keeps you up at night?
I’m a little bit obsessed with Critter Claws and am always thinking about my next nail design, or what I need to do for the business. Graphic design also keeps me up too, how to improve on work I’ve done for my course or how to be a better designer. I just never switch off!

McDrawn’s 5 Fave Things

Favourite project you’ve worked on?
My ‘MC drawn’ collection of course, though I have recently been commissioned to paint a wall mural inside a house- I’m still to decide if this project is filling me with boundless excitement or absolute nervouseness!

Favourite thing in your collection?
Hmm can’t say that I have one… Melon Cat Warrior, Party Sloth, Pug love… they all bring smiles.

Favourite blog/website?
Hard to narrow it down to one but two of my favourite inspirational sites are www.thisiscolossal.com and www.ignant.de

Favourite designer?
I think nature, through all its evolution, is a designer that can’t be compared, though if I had to name a person/firm that I regularly look to it would be Studio Kluif.

Favourite thing about Blackbird?
Every time I have visited Blackbird, as a store holder or a browser, I’ve met the most wonderful, friendly and inspirational people. The best type of motivation one can gain. Thanks Blackbird!

Getting to know you - The Red Forest

THE RED FOREST

Tell us about your label and the concept behind it?

The Red Forest: It is a name that I and my husband fondly use to refer to an abstract space where our creativity combine to produce wonderful little objects/ideas in the real world.

How did you get started?

Quite simply with a thread and a needle! And lots of paper!

What challenges have you faced since starting your own label?

It’s too early on in the business, the first real challenge will be to find success at the Blackbird market.

What can we expect to see from you at Blackbird Market?

Beautiful little hand-bound books.

Cats or Dogs?

Certainly cats!

Getting to know you - Vinyl Cuts

VINYL CUTS

Tell us about your label and the concept behind it?

We make homewares and jewellery out of pre-loved vinyl records. We believe in upcycling, recycling, reusing, reinvention and reconstruction. Our homewares range includes multi-tiered cake plates, clocks, coasters and bowls … and we’re hoping to expand into more items later in the year. Our range of jewellery includes necklaces, earrings, cuffs and brooches.

How did you get started?

A few years back, I was reading an article in the paper about how CDs were now obsolete and along with records 10s of thousands were going to the tip every week, as people upgrade to digital forms of music storage. This got the ball rolling… and after many many hours of trial and error, our first designs became a reality. We just think we’ve found a better use for records than decomposing at the tip.

What challenges have you faced since starting your own label?

There are many, we just got our first website up and nearly got sued for trademark infringement, so had to rebrand everything - very costly mistake. Price point has been a challenging one, keeping stockist happy with the price is always (I’m sure for most  businesses) a challenge. Price too cheap and you don’t make any $, too expensive and you cut out potential stockists… and since we both retail as well as wholesale, there is a whole myriad of issues that come up.

Our most recent biggest issue has been “copiers” people who see your products, follow your facebook page or see you at markets and then start doing exactly the same thing. It’s very frustrating, but some of these people are so blatant, using the same wording, trying to get into the same events, even claiming your press coverage as their own - it’s unbelievable!

What can we expect to see from you at Blackbird Market?

We’ll have a great selection of our new necklace range - which is an homage to music, so old fashion gramophone, cassettes, guitars… and works really well with the medium (being made from records)… we’ll also have selection of our 2-tier and 3-tier cake plates, as well as coasters… a little bit of everything.

Cats or Dogs?

Both

DIY - Miss Marci’s Lace Collar

MISS MARCI’S LACE COLLAR

DIY: Collared Lace Shirt

Lately I’ve been loving collared blouses, the perfect staple for any outfit.

Here’s a super easy DIY, adding a divine lace piece to your collar to add some charm and romance to any blouse.

 What you will need.

1. Blouse

2. Pins and thread to match.

3. Lace or lace collar. I purchased mine from Australian Button Co, George st Fitzroy for $5 each.. There is so many, and they’re so easy to attach!

Step 1.

Pin the edge of the lace  onto the collar. Ensure the lace reaches from one side of the collar to the other.

Sew along the edge of the collar, with black thread on top and white/cream underneath to match.

Step 2.

Pin the lace onto the edge of the blouse collar.

Step 3.

Sew around the collar so the lace sits nicely.

And your done!

So quick, and absolutely stunning.

Or if you don’t have the time or energy, you can purchase this one right here!
